The Goose Creek Association held its Annual Members’ Cocktail Party April 25, 2014  at Speedwell, the home of hosts Jason Paterniti and Nicole Watson.  In spite of a drenching rain just prior to the event, guests arrived and enjoyed the beautiful and historic farm and delicious fare provided by Back Street Catering.  Delightful music and song was provided by Amy and Jamie Potter of The Crooked Angels.  The GCA, co-chaired by Lori Keenan McGuinness and Bonnie Mattingly, bestowed its “Golden Goose Award” for her excellent work to establish the new Little River Rural Historic District in northern Fauquier County to past Co-Chair, Butter Strother.

Speedwell, located on the Snickersville Turnpike in Loudoun County, is graced by its early 19^th century residence and expansive views of the Blue Ridge.  North Beaverdam Creek defines the southern boundary of the property. Built in 1810, the house with 322 acres of land was purchased in 1835 by John Levin Powell.  He named the farm, “Levinworth,” after his grandfather, Leven Powell, who founded Middleburg and served in the new American army under Lafayette during the Revolutionary War. John Powell and his wife, Maria Grady Powell, had a son born at Levinworth, Lucien Whiting Powell, who became a well-known landscape artist during the late 19^th and early 20^th centuries; his works included Loudoun County scenes as well as a mural at the nearby Ebenezer Church.
